The Superpower of Being Fit!

I believe we all have superpowers, two of my personal faves are that I can completely forget about anything bad that happened.  Out of my mind completely.  The other superpower that’s repeatable by anyone is getting fit.  Everyone has different ideas of what “fit” means, but I know that if your feel fit in your mind, you’re going to find all kinds of superhuman strengths like determination, dedication, goal setting, and actual physical fitness in your world!

I was talking with a friend recently about a bike ride that I wanted to try. It was definitely challenging, and I was hoping she’d be down to join me. Instead, she was super hesitant, saying she’d never be in shape for that kind of ride.

That conversation really got me thinking about how important it is to not only get fit, but to stay fit in body and mind! Here are three questions I ask myself to check if I’m continuing to unleash my superpower of fit!

  1. What is working right now?

I always like to check in with myself to see what I am currently doing that is giving me a spark. It’s something that gives me a feeling of accomplishment and purpose. For me, it comes from some sort of daily movement. You know how the saying goes…A body in motion stays in motion. So, as soon as you do something to get you rolling, things start to get a little easier. Once you take that first step, the rest of the steps always seem a little easier.

  1. What am I looking forward to?

A few weeks ago, I was feeling overrun and out of sorts. When confiding in a friend, she asked me something that really struck me. “Well,” she said, “what do you have in your life that you’re looking forward to right now?” I froze. I couldn’t think of a single thing! Who knew this simple question would become such a pivotal moment for me.

No matter what it is, it’s so important to always have something to look forward to in your life. It can be something incredibly small like taking the dog for a walk every evening. Or, it can be something monumental like training for a marathon. Anything that gets you out of the eternal loop of monotony and knowing that there is something good on the horizon can greatly help unleash your fit superpower!

  1. What isn’t working and how can I fix it?

After you’ve evaluated what little movements are working and what you’re looking forward to, it’s so critical to consider what isn’t working in your life. But, you can’t just stop there. Once you figure out what isn’t working, you need to find a way around it and move your attention.

Once I had a hand injury and instead of dwelling on my limitations of what wasn’t working in my fitness life, I moved my attention. I shifted my focus to all of the fun and fit activities I could continue to do and focused on those.

Another way of thinking about this comes in the form of my precious 80-pound pup. She is absolutely terrified of thunderstorms. I mean TERRIFIED! Recently, there was a huge storm rolling through, and she was completely panicked, per the usual. I decided to try and shift her attention by allowing her on the bed with me (which is usually a big no-no at our house)! Much to my surprise, IT WORKED! She was so shocked that I was allowing her to join me in bed that she completely forgot about her worries and fears. It works the same for us!

If there is something in your life that is holding you back and keeping you worried, try and shift your attention to something new and positive.

Your superpower of fit is not a destination. Your superpower is having a long life of being fit, staying active, and continuing to strive and set goals for yourself! By finding what is working, something to look forward to, and shifting your attention from your obstacles, you are setting yourself up for a life of happiness and fitness!
