It’s true. You’d think that we’d recognize that pesky elephant and get it out of our way, but it’s just not that simple.
Similar to Gary Keller’s theory in his book The One Thing, there’s this one small thing that if we can figure out what it is and get it out of our way, it’ll act like a domino effect, knocking down all other things in our path.
Here’s another way to look at it; There are actually only three questions to consider if you want to tackle the elephant in your room…
What do I really want?
Before you do a deep dive on what is keeping you from your goals, you’ve got to know exactly what your goal is! Do you want to run a marathon? Lose a certain amount of weight? Feel better and have more energy?
Stop and take time to really think about what it is that you truly want!
What do you want to change to get it?
Once you know what you want, you need to think about what you’re willing to change to get it? For example, if you want to lose some weight, maybe you’re willing to start eating healthier. Or if you want to run a marathon, you need to first start running a certain amount a week.
Essentially, after you make a goal, you’ve got to determine how to achieve it. And, a lot of times, it includes giving something up or adding in something that will take time and effort.
What is holding me back?
Now that you’ve become more aware of what you want and what you want to do to achieve your goal, it’s time to step back and think, What is holding me back from reaching this goal?
In other words, you need to start figuring out what is really your elephant in the room. If you’re wanting to eat healthier in order to lose some weight, ask yourself, what is keeping me from eating healthier?
Is it that you’re short on time and can’t prepare meals? Is it that you find healthy foods bland? When you finally realize your elephant, you can make the necessary changes to get it completely out of your way. Then, all of the pieces will start falling into place!
Get out there and achieve your goals
Whether you realize it or not, everyone has an elephant in the room. Whether it’s fear, uncertainty, convenience, or something else, if you’re not reaching your goals, then there’s something specific holding you back!
